Your Body Isn't Meant to Be in Survival Mode 24/7

If there's one thing I've learned as a massage therapist, it's that so many women carry around much more than tight muscles. They're lugging around stress.
Not just the kind of stress that comes from having a busy week, but the kind that gradually builds over months or years. The kind that keeps you awake at night, makes you feel exhausted before your day even begins, and leaves you wondering why you may not feel like yourself anymore.
If that sounds like you, then know you're not alone.
One of the biggest reasons this happens is because of high levels of cortisol, a hormone that helps regulate stress.
Stress isn't just something that happens to you—it's something your body experiences.
Cortisol is essential for survival.
When you're faced with a stressful event, your body releases cortisol to help you respond. It increases your heart rate, which gives you energy, keeps you alert, and helps you get through difficult situations.
The problem is: many of us never truly get a break from stress.
Between working full-time, kids, managing a home, financial pressures, and trying to keep up with everyday life, our nervous systems rarely get the chance to slow down.
Eventually, your body may begin to stay in a constant state of "survival mode."
What are signs of high cortisol?
Feeling tired, even after a full night's sleep.
Constant neck and/or shoulder tension.
Difficulty falling asleep.
Anxiety or feeling easily overwhelmed by little things.
Brain fog
Recurring headaches.
Weight Gain
Digestive problems.
These symptoms can have many different causes, so it's important to talk with your healthcare provider if you have concerns.
Your body has been trying to get your attention.
One thing I hear all the time is, "I didn't realize how tense I was until I got on the table."
I hear it almost every week.
Our bodies are incredibly good at adapting. We get so used to carrying stress that tense shoulders, aching hips, tension headaches, and constant fatigue start to feel normal.
But just because you've been dealing with it for so long doesn't mean it's how you're supposed to keep living.
Your body is always talking with you. Sometimes those tight muscles, restless nights, or constant fatigue are your body's way of saying, I need a little help here.
Why massage therapy matters
For me, massage therapy has never been just about manipulating muscles.
It's about creating an environment where your body finally feels safe enough to let go.
For an hour, you don't have to take care of anyone else. You don't have to answer calls, texts, or emails. You don't have to worry about house chores, making decisions, or going over tomorrow's to-do list.
You get to rest.
While massage alone isn't a cure for chronic stress or high cortisol, it can be a meaningful part of a healthy self-care routine. It leads to relaxation, decreased muscle tension, and gives your nervous system a chance to shift out of that constant state of alertness.
Sometimes, that's exactly what your body has been craving.
My goal for every client
My goal for my clients isn't simply for you to feel pampered while you're on the table.
I want you to sleep better.
I want to leave you feeling a little more like yourself again.
Because it's what you deserve.
Taking care of yourself is one of the healthiest things you can do—not just for yourself, but for the people who depend on you every day.
Healing doesn't always happen in one moment. Sometimes it begins with simply allowing yourself to slow down.
And I believe every woman deserves that.
